One Folk Queen Anne Victorian Sold...But Here is Another!

Call Greg Rapp!

The single story Queen Anne Victorian ~ not something you see every day ~ and a real treasure.

Welcome to Folk Queen Anne at 429 Park Avenue in Salisbury, North Carolina, just sold by Realtor® Greg Rapp of Wallace Realty.
Architecturally, this fine restored vintage home is a one-story Queen Anne complete with many original features: original heart pine floors, unique to this region, and original moldings that have been restored in many rooms to a soft gleam. Five original coal burning fireplaces boast original mantels, beveled mirrors, tile work, and iron screens. Many original lighting fixtures are in place, as are original deep porcelain claw-foot bathtubs! Perfect for entertaining, 429 Park Avenue is a spacious dwelling with over 2300 square feet of living space. In addition, a 500 square foot wrap-around front porch is the most identifying feature of this showcase Queen Anne home, a wonderful area for entertaining or just relaxing, decorated in Victorian style with spindles and millwork.

The handsome Queen Anne at 429 Park Avenue, most recently the home of Historic Salisbury Foundation's Executive Director, is sold, thanks toGreg Rapp. . . but lovers of old houses and the special unique character of this style of home should not give up hope! Uniquely, there is another single-story Folk Queen Anne for sale in Salisbury...and in the heart of the historic downtown.

If you love the style of the Queen Anne, but single-story living is more appealing to you, you MUST check out the similar Victorian at 120 North Jackson Street.

The Circa 1899 John Whitehead House is For Sale in Salisbury North Carolina!

This house embodies the distinctive architectural features characteristic of modest Queen Anne style houses of that period, exhibiting asymmetrical massing, steeply pitched hipped roof with cross gables, a one story wrap around porch, and dominant front facing gables.

In 1923, the single-story Queen Anne Victorian home known as the John Whitehead House began to go through several changes in ownership. By 1986, the house was in dire straits and scheduled for demolition. In order to save the home, Historic Salisbury Foundation moved it to 120 North Jackson Street where it stands today ~ and is for sale via Greg Rapp with Wallace Realty (704.213.6846).

The John Whitehead House is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Typical of a simple, yet well-finished, one-story Queen Anne Style cottage, 120 N Jackson Street has kept much of its original late 1800s integrity. It boasts a cross gabled roof and full width porch with turned posts and baluster as well as spindlework frieze.

This home at 120 N. Jackson Street, in its wonderful central downtown location, has been most recently used as law offices; its kitchenette and six spacious rooms made the home a perfect office setting. Yet,with minimal remodeling, The John Whitehead House is prime to be reestablished as a residential home (it will need a full-bath installed ~ it has one half-bath currently).

Inside, 120 N. Jackson Street is handsomely detailed with molded door and window framed and reeded wainscoting throughout. The mantels are simple but boldly detailed with a variety of molding patterns and bulls-eye ornaments. Solid four-panel doors have delicate brass hardware.

Like the design at 429 Park Avenue, the large center hall, nearly 40 feet long by 8 feet wide, is a room unto itself, handsomely separating the front and rear portions of the home by an opening fitted with glazed French doors and a handsome spindlework lunette. It opens to the front and rear of the house. The original door with tall arched lights remains at the rear entrance but the front door was replaced in an earlier remodeling, from what might have been a simple door and window surround, characteristic of Queen Anne houses, with elaborated pediments.

This historic home may appear small from the exterior, but once you step inside you'll see how spacious 2140 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 1 half-bath can be... including the Pullman kitchen ~ with its arched entry and efficient use of tiny space including built-in china cabinet and cream-colored cabinetry. And, with the sink nice and close to the stove, you don't have to haul meal preparations very far! This perfectly charming kitchen positions the sink near the window for a sweet view into the back garden.

You will love the large bay window nook in the front parlor. A similar nook can be found in the historic Stokes-Snider House, originally home to Dr. J. Ernest Stokes, one of the South’s eminent surgeons, and partner with Dr. John Whitehead, who together championed the Whitehead-Stokes Sanitorium, which grew over the years to a 60-bed hospital at the corner of North Fulton and Liberty streets. (The Stokes-Snider House at 324 N. Fulton, sold by Greg Rapp, is now gloriously restored to a bed & breakfast called 'Across The Pond'. Stories passed down through time tell us that Dr. Snider's wife would sit in the 'nook' and watch for patients coming up the path!)

This 1899 home is in one of the BEST locations! Right in downtown historic Salisbury, but just off the main corridors, the new owners will be walking to restaurants, shopping, and Salisbury's thriving art scene that includes three community theatre troupes, a nationally accredited art gallery, and numerous arts events, live music, and individual galleries.

The Folk Victorian home at 429 Park Avenue might be off the market, but hold tight...the beautifully preserved Queen Anne at 120 N. Jackson Street is ready to be your next home . . . as a live-work potential right in thriving downtown Salisbury, or can be purely a home for your business. Let Greg Rapp know your vision...and make an appointment to see this piece of North Carolina history...and make it your own! Up the staircase finished with original wainscoting is another large landing ~ another room unto itself ~ and two more of the home's bedrooms. One is currently being utilized as a craft room!

The home boasts four original fireplaces with original mantel pieces and tile work ~ some are now upfitted to include gas logs. The fireplaces are in parlor, dining room, and two bedrooms. How nice to cozy up to on a winter's eve!

And in perfect synergy with Southern living, the original large front porch will be your favorite sitting spot on a warm summer evening. The porch, in true Folk Victorian style, is trimmed with its original 1903 spindlework, eave brackets, and jigsaw cut adornments.

About the Folk Victorian House Style:

The simple Folk Victorian homes, built between 1870 and 1910, were a more affordable alternative to the ornate Queen Anne Victorian and the Eastlake Victorian styles. Before the age of the railroads, families built no-fuss, square houses in the Folk style, however the rise of industrialization made it easier and more affordable to add those decorative details to otherwise simple homes because decorative architectural trim could be mass-produced. As the railroad expanded, factory-made building parts could be sent to far corners of the continent. In addition, small towns could now obtain sophisticated woodworking machinery. A crate of scrolled brackets might find its way to Kansas or Wyoming, where carpenters could mix and match the pieces according to personal whim... or, according to what happened to be in the latest shipment.

Folk Victorian houses usually have these features:

• Brackets under the eaves
• Porches with spindlework or flat, jigsaw cut trim

Many Folk Victorian houses were adorned with flat, jigsaw cut trim in a variety of patterns. Others had spindles, gingerbread, and details borrowed from the Carpenter Gothic style. With their spindles and porches, some Folk Victorian homes may suggest Queen Anne architecture. However, unlike the Queen Anne Victorian style, Folk Victorian houses are orderly and symmetrical houses. They do not have towers, bay windows, or elaborate moldings.
