Dutch Colonial Revival Home with over 2300 Square Feet of Living ~ in Milford Hills! $129.9K!!

This very cute circa 1930 Dutch Colonial Revival style home in the Milford Hills Neighborhood of Salisbury NC is for sale!  128 Milford Drive South, with over 2300 square feet of living space, offers 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a large living room, new kitchen and more!  This great home is freshly painted inside and out, and all the floors have been newly refinished.

This home is a Sears Catalog home! Sears Catalog Homes (sold as Sears Modern Homes) were ready-to-assemble kit houses sold through mail order by Sears, Roebuck and Company. Sears reported that more than 70,000 of these homes were sold in North America between 1908 and 1940. Primarily shipped via railroad boxcars, these kits included all the materials needed to build a house. Many were assembled by the new homeowner and friends, relatives, and neighbors, in a fashion similar to the traditional barn-raisings of farming families.  Not only is this a Sears kit home, but 128 Milford Drive is one of the very first homes built in the Milford Hills subdivision.

The most recognizable architectural feature of the Dutch Colonial Revival style is the classic barn-style roofing that sets Dutch Colonial homes apart from other homes. These roofs feature a broad gambrel shape, meaning they angle once, instead of lying flat and rising to a ridgepole. Dutch Colonial roofs also have flared eaves that extend over the porches, which gives them a hat-like look.  Dormers, like the dormer bedroom windows on 128 Milford Drive are another common feature. A description in Antique Home (www.antiquehome.org) tells us:

"The legend goes that this low, sweeping roof, with its dormer windows, was the ingenious means by which the Dutch Colonists evaded the heavy tax on two story houses. And there is today a practical advantage over the two story house in saving of materials without the loss of space. The extraordinary flexibility of the style makes it possible for one to arrange the interior to suit his taste and still be assured of an harmonious exterior. One wing or two can be added without disturbing the gentle contour. One can compare this flexibility to Colonial types where there is harmony without freedom, and to English types where there is freedom without definite symmetry."

The Sears kit design slightly modified the traditional Dutch Colonial Revival style at 128 Milford Drive with the eye-catching gable feature over the extended front portico with its classically styled columns.

The spacious 18' x 12' living room in this Milford Hills home has built in bookshelves flanking one side of the wood-burning fireplace and French doors leading to the 18' x 18' great room and front porch under overhanging eaves, running 2/3 the width of the house.

Two of the four bedrooms are large 18' x 11' rooms with dormer windows, while the remaining two are good-sized 12' x 11' spaces.

You'll love the brand new kitchen, a wonderful 12' x 12' space, with honey-coloured cabinetry, and streaming with natural light through multi-paned windows, and its adjoining 9' x 12' breakfast room.

This home is newly sided with HardiePlank® siding, an innovative fiber-cement siding, which means that it is a combination of cellulose fibers, along with cement-like materials. In other words, it's partly wood, partly cement, and is expected to have at least a 50-year life span. But conceivably, HardiePlank® can last longer than that, especially if painted and properly maintained.  HardiePlank® looks very much like wood, is fire and insect resistant, and unlike vinyl siding, can be painted in a color of your choice.

Visitors to Salisbury and residents alike are immediately charmed by the Milford Hills neighborhood, with its well-kept  homes, quiet streets, and mature shade trees and gardens.  And despite being tucked away, the neighborhood is just minutes from thriving shopping and banking areas as well as a short drive to Salisbury's historic downtown with  its vibrant arts and culture scene that includes a nationally accredited art gallery, three theatre troupes, and several live music venues.  Downtown Salisbury celebrates the 1st Friday of each month with themed events that transpose the streets into fun-filled evenings for families, friends, couples...everyone!  Gift shops, restaurants from casual to elegant, and an independent bookstore give Downtown Salisbury, with buildings dating back to the 1800s, its unique and special character.  It's no wonder so many love calling Salisbury, North Carolina home!
